Fred Terracina Obituary

Fred C. Terracina, September 26, 1942 - March 16, 2025 Fred C. Terracina, (Fritz) longtime resident of Brooklyn Heights and East Aurora, NY passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 16, 2025. He is survived by his partner Candace McClintock, first wife Lorraine H. Terracina, and many friends.

Fred attended SUNY Binghamton (Harpur College) for his BS. During his undergraduate days he worked summers painting, notably on the then new Verrazano Bridge, from which he survived a fall. After college he joined the Peace Corps and served in the Philippines. He subsequently returned to Binghamton University for his Masters degree, and went on to earn his PhD at the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry. He held a research position at SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry in Syracuse, and was an expert in fungi. A lifelong learner and teacher, Fred’s curiosity on a wide range of subjects never abated.

A world traveler, he and Candace enjoyed many long sojourns in Europe. He was a wonderful cook, and could tell you the science behind it all. In retirement he enjoyed summertime walks with Candace and friends at Knox Farm, birdwatching from his East Aurora window, playing Scrabble with his friend, Dave Meltzer, and visits with old friends. Fred maintained close friendships for over 60 years. He was predeceased by dear friends Richard Goldsmith, David Meltzer, David Russell, and Joe Wolfer.

Fred cared little about money for himself, but preferred to help people in need. Whether a loan to keep a business afloat, paying for someone’s education, or money to help a parent provide for a child’s welfare, he provided, often without hope of payback. As he often said, “A dollar ain’t worth a nickel ’til you spend it.” Fred’s generosity throughout his life lives on through his anatomical donation to SUNY Upstate Medical University, and his desire to support The Smile Train, and Doctors Without Borders. Please consider memorial donations to these organizations.
