Robert A. Burrows
Of Ouaquaga
Robert A. Burrows, 88, of Ouaquaga passed away at his home after a brief illness on Thursday July 13, 2023. Robert was predeceased by his parents George W. and Maude V. Burrows of Harpursville. He was also predeceased by his brother George Burrows, his sisters Floy Bell, Althea Rutenber, Viola Starbuck, and his grandson Connor R. Burrows.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, of 67 years, Nancy Burrows, and their children George (Aline) Honaunau, HI, Sandra (Jerry) Cook, Otego, NY., a classmate and lifelong family friend Oscar Edgerton, Candor, NY and his furry companion Kallie Kat and several nieces and nephews and many very dear friends.
Robert was a graduate of the Harpursville Central School, class of 1952. He served in the National Guard in both NY and NJ. He held many jobs during his career, first working on the family farm (Gracemore Farms), driving a tractor at 5 years old, one of his favorite stories to tell. He worked at First City National Bank in Binghamton, after realizing the office job was not his cup of tea, he went to work at Whipples Lumber Yard. He also worked for the Town of Colesville Highway Department. After he retired from the Town of Colesville, he worked in the garage at Maines Paper and Food Service, where he helped build his son's tractor-trailer from the wheels up. A job he was very proud to be part of. After a few years there he went to work at Spirit Miller in Deposit, NY driving utility trucks across the country. After the floods in 2006, he went to work for Schaefer Enterprises in Deposit, NY driving a dump truck. He finally retired for good in 2018.
Robert was a lifelong member of the Ouaquaga Fire Department. He served as Chief twice in his 60+ years in the department. He was also on the Board of Commissioners and also served as Treasurer. He was also on the Cemetery Board and Treasurer of Knox Cemetery as well as caretaker for 39 years. He was an avid train buff traveling to different areas for train rides. He also had a train layout at home that he worked on. His son made him a to-scale replica of the Strucca Viaduct for his layout. It is a piece that he was truly proud of and would show it off to anyone that came to visit.
