Steven Jacob Peters
Of Largo, FL
Steven J. Peters, 47 of Largo, FL and formerly of Chenango Bridge died unexpectedly on Sunday May 5, 2024. He is survived by his daughter, Victoria and her mother, Amanda McGuire, FL, son, Noah, Corning, parents, Michael & Stephanie Peters, Clearwater Beach & Sackets Harbor, brothers & sisters-in-law, Michael & Melissa Peters, Binghamton, Josh & Corey Peters, Vestal, niece and nephews, Kellen, Elliott, Marcus & Brooks, Owen, Ava, Parker & Evan and also several aunts, uncles, cousins of the Peters and Smith families.
Steve was born in Elmira, New York. The family moved to Chenango Forks when he was 2 and he grew up on Poplar Hill in the Town of Chenango. He was an adventurous and active young boy who would play until dark with his brothers and friends. His summers were spent up north at Campbell’s Point on beautiful Henderson Harbor where many cherished memories were created. Between the water activities and the camaraderie of his many friends, the days past quickly with endless beach whiffle ball, king of the raft competitions and night time hide and seek challenges. One big thrill was the day he landed a 36” northern pike in an epic fight and no net in the boat! It was a special moment.
Steve attended Chenango Forks Schools and was an excellent student. He always worked hard and did his best. Setting the bar high also lead to frustration and distraction.
Steve graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina, where he regularly made the President’s list and received a commendation letter from the Darla Moore School of Business. To achieve academic success, Steve had to isolate himself and totally focus on his studies but he still became a huge Gamecocks fan. Years later, he attended the 2013 Outback Bowl in Tampa when his beloved Gamecocks beat Michigan 33-28 in a last minute thriller. (the Jadaveon Clowney game)
We will cherish those good times together. Steve was a good and kind person and had a big heart. He did simple tokens of thanks like buying the security guard coffee. He loved to grill outdoors. Barbecue ribs and steak were his favorites. He had a passion for football and he loved following the NFL. He also enjoyed the action of sports betting! The longer the odds the more he liked it! Always looking for the big payoff. Another shared highlight was attending the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament in Houston and rooting for Syracuse. They didn’t make the final but seeing Adrian Peterson, his football hero, and witnessing one of the greatest all time finishes made the trip special.
Fitness and working out was integral to Steve’s life. He was disciplined and it was one of the few things that brought him peace on a daily basis.
Steve’s children were truly his blessings. He loves Noah and Victoria dearly and his enduring hope is that they will always do their best, find their purpose in life and find joy in life’s simple pleasures-something he struggled to do. He will be keeping an eye on you from above and know he is with you always.
A special acknowledgement of Amanda McGuire, Victoria’s mother, who lived with Steve. She was there for him through thick and thin. She’s a special person and wonderful mother.
Steve’s endless chase for a solution to his pain lead him from one doctor to the next for many years. He was constantly self-diagnosing to seek relief. Whether the pain was physical or emotional, it was constant and very real to him.
Steve was baptized as a baby at Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church. Two years ago, Steve chose to reaffirm his faith in a Believers Baptism held in the Gulf of Mexico by Calvary Baptist Church. Praise God!
Steve was a good man with a gentile spirit. Dear son, father, brother, friend and uncle, we will truly miss your smile and laughter. You are now at Peace and will live in our hearts forever.
