Victor Cower Obituary

Victor L. “Vic” Cower

Of Harpursville

Victor L. “Vic” Cower, aged 90, beloved husband, father, friend and businessman of the Harpursville community passed away at home peacefully on Fri. Aug. 15, 2025, following a brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

Victor is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marian (Backus) Cower, his 4 children, Ricky, Vicki (Rick Baker, pre-deceased), Moe & Trudy.  Also his grandchildren, Aaron (Meg), Victor (pre-deceased), Danny, Payton & Ian and his great grandchildren, Rayann, Tyler, Victor (Bubba) and Makayla (Skippy).  Vic was predeceased by his parents, Maurice & Beatrice Cower and in-laws, Leon & Alice Backus, his 3 sisters, as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.  He is survived by 2 remaining sisters-in-law, Rosie & Janet.

Born on Peg Leg Road to Maurice & Beatrice Cower, the family moved to Welton St. and this became the place Vic chose to spend his entire life.  He was proud of his home and spent many hours meticulously maintain (grooming) the lawn.  Vic began his career for the Town of Colesville and then joined Local 410 and became an Operating Engineer.  Local, state inspectors spoke of loving when Vic was on a job, as he was the best fine-grade operator to work for them.  Vic retired from construction in 1998.

He continued to stay busy, selling used cars from Welton St. Motors, a business he and his wife, Marian, started in 1977.  Vic enjoyed going to the auction in LaFayette, as well as the business right up until his last days.  Vic made friends with everybody, which included many special friends.  He was especially grateful to his Welton St. neighbors these last few years that stopped by daily to check on him & Marian.  Vic (Curly) enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Dennis, that was formed when they worked for A.J. Cerasaro.  Vic was well known for his strength, sharp mind (which included his vast knowledge of local history), kind heart and abundant sense of humor.  Vic never hesitated to lend a hand, always helping others without expecting anything in return.  His presence, generosity and unwavering love and spirit will be profoundly missed by all.

Per Victor’s wishes, there will be no formal services.  A Celebration of His Life will be announced.  Please give us time to grieve the loss of our Hero.
