William R. Szigeti of Harpursville died on Wednesday August 16, 2023 at the age of 74.William is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan, his daughter Larissa, his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Gil Allen and his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Lynn Szigeti. He is also survived by his cousins Gail Freund, Debbie Baldwin and several nieces and nephews. William was predeceased by his parents William Szigeti and Cecila Czettl Szigeti.
A Cornell graduate and Triangle Fraternity member, he served in the US Army and received an honorable discharge. His career as a Chemical Engineer began at General Tire in Akron, Ohio and spanned through the various takeovers of GAF through Anitec. Having gathered sufficient qualifying experience he took the Professional Engineering License Exam and passed on his first attempt.
Bill loved puzzles and playing board games. He looked forward to his annual New Year's Eve Boardgame Night with friends and family. He and his wife volunteered as Odyssey of the Mind coaches for 10 years. He enjoyed singing as a member of the Southerntiersmen Barbershop Group and joined his wife doing local musical theater productions including Lazarus, Annie Warbucks, A Christmas Carol, Fiddler on the Roof and The Music Man.
Bill was an intelligent, patient, kind and considerate man and a dedicated and loving father. Whether it was bending his 6'3” frame to help his daughter learn to walk, taking her hiking in the woods, teaching her to fish, being her chauffeur during her teen years or tutoring her in Calculus he enjoyed every moment.
Funeral Services will be held at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home 69-71 Maple Street, Harpursville on Tuesday, August 22nd at 11 a.m. with Rev Ronald Wenzinger officiating. The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 to 11a.m. with the service to follow. Burial will be in the New Ohio Cemetery, Tunnel at the conclusion of the service.
